Imagine biting into a slice of pizza in a video game, or sampling chocolate in the metaverse, without the food actually being there! Scientists are experimenting with “e-taste” technology, which uses electrical and thermal signals to simulate flavors on your tongue. Combined with virtual reality, this could allow people to “taste” food through a headset or device. The tech is still in its early stages, but it could one day change gaming, online shopping, and even health care by helping people manage diets or experience new foods without calories.

Your Task:

  • Think about how e-taste could be used in the future.

  • Where would this technology be most useful: gaming, restaurants, healthcare, or somewhere else?

  • What are some benefits—but also possible downsides—of tasting food without eating it?

Describe one creative use for e-taste technology and explain why it could be exciting (or concerning) for the future.
