Mental health gets talked about more than ever, but that doesn’t mean everyone understands it. In fact, a lot of what people think they know comes from myths, stereotypes, or things they’ve heard online.
These myths can make it harder for people to ask for help, open up to others, or even recognize when something isn’t right. Breaking the stigma starts with knowing what’s real and what’s not.
When people believe myths about mental health, it can lead to silence, judgment, or missed chances to help someone. But when you challenge those ideas, even with one simple message, you help create a culture where people feel safer speaking up.
And that can make a bigger difference than you think.
Your Task: Myth-Busting in Action
With a classmate, discuss the following and respond in the text box. Remember that you both need to submit a Skillbuilder response in order to be eligible for the $100 gift card.
Step 1: Spot the Myth
Look at these common beliefs. Which ones have you heard before?
- “Mental health issues aren’t that serious.”
- “People should just tough it out.”
- “Only certain people struggle with mental health.”
- “Talking about it makes things worse.”
Pick one that stands out to you.
Step 2: Flip It to Reality
Rewrite that myth as a truth:
- What’s actually more accurate?
- Why could believing the myth be harmful?
Step 3: Create a Message That Matters
Now turn your “reality” into something others would notice:
- A short social post
- A slogan or phrase
- A message you’d say to a friend
Make it clear, real, and something people your age would actually listen to.
