Scientists in the UK have created the world’s first microscope made entirely from 3D-printed parts. Thanks to open-source blueprints, almost anyone can build one for about $60. The project, called OpenFlexure, has already spread to labs in more than 50 countries—even Antarctica! While traditional microscopes can cost thousands of dollars, this invention makes science more affordable and accessible worldwide.

Your Task: Imagine you’re part of the OpenFlexure team.

  • Who could benefit the most from a low-cost microscope like this (schools, hospitals, researchers, etc.)?

  • How could access to cheaper scientific tools change education or healthcare in your community?

  • What else can be printed with a 3D printer to save money?

  • Share your ideas about who would use the microscope and why it matters.
